The richness and variety of the Library’s exhibitions reflect the universal and diverse nature of the Library’s collections. Four major themes underlie most of the exhibitions—the presentation of great libraries and written traditions; the exploration of America’s past and character; the examination of world cultures and history; and the celebration of events, individuals, and works.

The Library of Congress offers a wide range on online exhibitions featuring treasures from its own collections as well as the treasures of other national libraries. Some digital exhibits replicate and/or complement physical exhibits, while others are digital originals.

For information about current and past physical exhibits in the library, visit the Special Collections Exhibits page. Exhibits are curated by library staff, interns, and faculty and staff from other departments.

While this exhibit is based on a close examination of manuscripts and early printed books held at the Special Collections Research Center, its main inspiration is the landmark exhibit catalog, Marks in Books, Illustrated and Explained (Cambridge, Mass.: Houghton Library Publications, ) by Roger Stoddard.
